How we work:

If you feel some counselling would help you, then please contact us for further information.

A Body Positive staff member will make the initial appointment and thereafter appointments are co-ordinated by yourself, the counsellor and the receptionist.

Each session is normally between 50-60mins long and you can work out with your counsellor how often you will need to attend.

Cost:

Counselling is provided at Body Positive in Auckland to our members via the Positive Health Scheme. The normal cost is $60 per session.

For Positive Health members who currently receive support from Work & Income (WINZ):

  • Body Positive will apply on your behalf, to have the cost of the first 10 sessions per year funded via WINZ.
  • If further sessions are required after the initial 10 sessions, we will apply to WINZ again for this (WINZ may fund up to an additional 20 sessions per year depending on the need of the client)
  • Counselling sessions will only begin after approval from WINZ has been given.

For Positive Health members who DO NOT currently receive any support from Work & Income (WINZ):

  • Positive Health will pay $40 per session, towards the first 10 counselling sessions per year.
  • Members will be required to contribute the additional $20 per session - this additional fee may be lowered or waived at the discretion of the counsellor, depending on the members current needs and situation.

I've been working at Body Positive since 2009 and originally came here on a student placement to complete a Diploma in Counselling. Over the years I've carried on with my education to complete a Bachelor of Counselling and now I'm working towards a Master of Counselling at Auckland University.

The uniqueness of Body Positive is that it is an agency built on supporting people living with HIV and is community based, offering many layers of support. I love the work I do as a counsellor as I can see that I'm part of the story in helping people successfully live with HIV. My work with clients is varied and incorporates the many different stages in their journey, from the moment they are diagnosed as living with HIV, and the range of feelings that come with this, to when they might be deciding to start medication and exploring the extra responsibilities that can come with this.

My role at Body Positive includes me going out into the community providing HIV rapid testing. From my perspective, it's about keeping my community safe and I enjoy this part of my role immensely. I see these clinics as a time to openly check-in with people about their sexual activities and to provide support and education.

In my role as a counsellor, I believe a therapeutic relationship based on confidentiality is paramount for the counselling process. I work holistically, incorporating all aspects of the person's life, so they can decide if there are areas in which they would like to change, as well as celebrating the areas of their lives that they're proud of. I see each client's journey as being unique, so I tailor the sessions around them with an objective of creating a safe place to fully explore all aspects of their self.

My passion is people and my aim is to advocate and promote a holistic approach to wellbeing. I celebrate uniqueness, diversity and enjoy working with people from all walks of life within an ethical, safe and culturally sensitive environment. My counselling practice is primarily underpinned by Client Centred Practice, emphasising empathy, trust, honesty and non-judgment as the building blocks to a collaboratively successful therapeutic relationship. Additionally Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Existential therapy enhance my practice approach while engaging in such privileged work.
